South Korean presidential candidate concerned about Trump's aircraft carrier story.

A presidential candidate from South Korea’s former ruling party said Wednesday that confusion over the mission of a U.S. aircraft carrier in the region could cause South Korea to "not trust" what President Trump says for the remainder of his term.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Hong Joon-pyo, the candidate from Park Geun-hye’s party, said Trump’s earlier comments about moving the USS Carl Vinson toward North Korea in a show of force spurred by that rogue nation's nuclear program was important to South Korea’s security.

The U.S. Navy said Tuesday it did not immediately move the carrier toward North Korea despite President Trump’s earlier comments made on Fox Business that he was sending an “armada” to deter Pyongyang.

"We are sending an armada, very powerful. We have submarines, very powerful, far more powerful than the aircraft carrier,” Trump told the Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo last week. “We have the best military people on Earth.  And I will say this: [Kim Jong Un] is doing the wrong thing.”

Military officials said at the time the Vinson was canceling a previous itinerary and instead was going to head toward the Korean Peninsula. The ship is indeed expected to reach the peninsula -- but only after first steaming towards Australia.

The White House said it did not mislead allies about the ship’s movements.

“The president said we have an armada going toward the peninsula,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. “That’s a fact. It happened. It is happening, rather.”

Narushige Michishita, a professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, told the Journal that regardless of whether the U.S. intended to deceive or the narrative was a miscommunication, it looked bad for the White House.

“At a time of emergency, disinformation could be used as a tactic, but if the U.S. president spreads disinformation in peacetime like now, it would hurt the credibility of the U.S.,” he said.

US gunman kills three 'in race attack'

Three white men were killed and another wounded when a black gunman opened fire in Fresno, California, in a suspected race attack, police have said.

Kori Ali Muhammad shot 16 rounds in 90 seconds in the shooting spree on Tuesday, said Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

He shouted "God is great" in Arabic as police arrested him but this was a hate crime not terrorism, Mr Dyer believed.

Mr Muhammad, 39, was also wanted for the murder of a security guard outside a motel in the city last week.

The suspect had indicated on social media that he hated white people and expressed anti-government views, police said.

All four victims were white men, and one of them was shot sitting in a car.

"He wanted to kill as many people as he could and that's what he set out to do," said Mr Dyer.

"This was a random act of violence. These were unprovoked attacks by an individual who was intent on carrying out homicides today."

Mr Dyer added that Tuesday's attack "has nothing to do with terrorism in spite of the statements that he [Kori Ali Muhammad] made".

"He did clarify that the reason he had made that statement was that in the event that anything did happen to him that he was in fact pledging his allegiance to God for protection."

The shooting began around 10:45 local time near the headquarters for Catholic Charities.

Witnesses said they saw a man carrying a large handgun, which he reloaded several times between shots.

The gunman then fired at a utility vehicle belonging to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, killing the passenger.

Mr Muhammad's father later told the Los Angeles Times that his son believed he was part of an ongoing war between whites and blacks and that "a battle was about to take place".

Mr Muhammad, who went by the nickname Black Jesus, now faces four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The latest shooting is also likely to reignite fresh debates about gun control in the US.

More than 30,000 people are killed by gun violence across the country each year.
